The Most Popular Augmented Reality Platform is Already in Your Hands

If you have tried any augmented reality experiences, were they through a smartphone or another device?

Today, AR is becoming mainstream, as the popularity of the technology grows with examples such as interactive experiences developed for social media, camera filters, within print and digital advertising.

When it was a brand-new innovation, AR was only accessible using dedicated technology such as smartglasses, lenses in goggles or dedicated simulators, but today, it is accessible to anyone who can hold a smartphone.

ABI Research, a market research and intelligence firm with a technology focus based in New York City, recently published a report that revealed that, contrary to popular belief, a majority of the value generated from AR is by platforms on smartphones, rather than dedicated technologies such as smartglasses and mobile, tether and standalone AR and VR devices.

Otherwise known as “handheld AR,” smartphone AR encompasses technology such as filters found on social media sites like Instagram, and games such as Pokémon Go, as well as apps that use similar technology to that used by Captum.

Clearly, it makes up the vast majority of the device landscape – and device sales – for years to come,” says John Koetsier from Forbes’ Consumer Tech.
